Microsoft reportedly will stop DVD player features which embedded directly in Windows 8. This means that users who want to play DVD, must use Media Center or third-party applications.

Unfortunately, Media Center that offered by Microsoft is not free aka paid. One way is to buy this feature in add-on packages such as Windows Media Center 8 pack or Windows 8 Pro Pack.
Quoted from IT Pro Portal, Sunday (05/06/2012), this decision was taken based on Microsoft research. They found the use of television and DVD on personal computers has decreased suddenly.
Microsoft make sure users that online media support are the focus of Windows 8. Windows 8 will focus on file with H.264, VC-1, MP4, AAC, WMA, MP3, PCM, Dolby Digital Plus codec, and large number of other formats.
Users have the alternative to install Media Player Classic or VLC Media Player. Both are free programs that can easily play DVD. No official explanation from the Microsoft, about this rumors.
