Support of touchscreen input on this camera intended for novice users presents some features previously only available in a pocket camera or mirrorless, such as auto-focus area selection (AF) or settings options on touch screen.
Touchscreen is able to recognize gesture input that is commonly found in smartphone or tablet devices, such as image zooming and swiping with your finger to navigate photos. Besides 3-inch touch screen, EOS 650D also has flexible hinge that can be rotated to the outside (articulated screen) for easy to take photo with a difficult angle.
In it, EOS 650D has a 18 megapixel sensor which paired with Digic 5 image processor. Use of Digic 5 in this camera increases burst rate speed up to 5 frames per second.
Together with EOS 650D, Canon introduced two new types of lens, that is EF-s 18-135 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM and EF 40 mm f/2.8 STM pancake lens. Stepping Motor (STM) type which used in these two lens is claimed can't make noise when recording video if used with EOS 650D.
